Kelowna, B.C. – The Vancouver Giants rallied from a 5-2 deficit to beat the Kelowna Rockets 7-5 and snap their 3 game losing streak. Craig Cunningham led the way with 5 assists, while his linemate Brendan Gallagher had 3 goals and an assist.
The Giants started things off in impressive fashion scoring a power play goal just 1:19 into the game. Cain Franson picked his 2nd of the season. Just 1:21 later Tyler Hart scored his first of the year in his first game of the season to make it 2-0 Vancouver after 20 minutes.
Kelowna came out flying in the second period, scoring 5 goals in the first 8:36. Spencer Main scored 2, Mitch Callahan, Kevin Smith, and Shane McColgan each had singles to give the Rockets a 5-2 lead. Mark Segal’s night was done in net for Vancouver, he was replaced by Brendan Jensen after giving up 5 goals on 22 shots. However, the Giants would not quit, on the power play Matt MacKay scored his 5th of the season to make it a 5-3 game. Then the turning point of the game came late in the second, Tyson Barrie had his goal disallowed because of a goalie interference penalty. Instead of being down 6-3, Vancouver would get a power play goal from Brendan Gallagher to trail just 5-4 through 40 minutes of play.
It didn’t take long for Vancouver to tie up the game in the third. Just :11 into the period, Gallagher got his 2nd of the game and 12th of the season to make it 5-5. Then 1:38 later Neil Manning scored to make it 6-5. Cunningham picked up his 5th assist of the night. Gallagher would add an empty netter for the hat trick and his 13th of the year. Jensen stopped all 20 shots in relief to earn the win. 7-5 was the final.
The Giants are back in action Friday night at the Pacific Coliseum when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings. Game time is 7:30pm. Pregame show starts at 7:00pm on AM 650.
