The Vancouver Giants won their 6th straight game, defeating the Everett Silvertips 2-1 in a shootout Saturday night at Comcast Arena in Everett. James Henry scored the shootout winner to help the Giants earn their 15th win of the season and remain in top spot in the BC division.
The opening period saw the Giants outshoot the Silvertips 16-5 and one disallowed goal. Everett thought they had the game’s first goal, but Jari Ericcson kicked the puck past Adam Morrison so it was immediately waved off. No score through 20 minutes.
For the 3rd time in their last 4 games the Giants gave up a shorthanded goal as Evan Morden’s seeing eye shot some how beat Morrison to put the home side up 1-0 midway through the second period. Once again the Giants peppered Everett goaltender Austin Lotz, but could not beat him. Morrison was also stellar in the period making 11 saves including stopping Ryan Chynoweth on a breakaway. Shots were 33-17 through 40 minutes and the Tips lead 1-0.
Just under 5 minutes into the third period, the Giants would finally solve Lotz as Taylor Makin scored his 2nd goal of the season on a nice feed from Dalton Sward to even the game at 1-1. Neither team was able to find the back of the net the rest of the way through regulation or overtime, so a shootout was needed.
Brendan Gallagher and James Henry both scored for Vancouver while Morrison stopped 2 of 3 Everett shooters to secure the victory. 2-1 was the final score. The Giants outshot the Silvertips 47-25. Vancouver finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while Everett went 0-for-2.
The Giants wrap up their 3 games in 3 nights tomorrow evening at the Pacific Coliseum vs. the defending WHL Champions from Kootenay. Game time is 5:00 pm. The pregame show begins at 4:30 pm on AM 650.
