Giants Edge Cougars in a Shoot-Out

Despite losing a two-goal lead in the third period, the Giants found a way to get their sixth win of the season in the shootout at the Pacific Coliseum on Sunday night.

The Cougars came up with the first goal just 36 seconds into the game on a goal from Alex Forsberg, but it was Vancouver who went back to their locker room with the lead after 20 minutes of play. Rookie Taylor Vickerman scored his first career WHL goal to tie the game and before the first period was over, Trevor Cheek scored his third goal in two games on a two-man advantage to put Vancouver up 2-1.

The Giants added to their one-goal lead just 3:49 into the second period on a goal from Riley Kieser.

Brett Roulston scored late in the third period to put the Cougars within one 28 seconds later, Jari Erricson tied the game for the Cougars at 17:35.

The teams went into overtime tied at 3 but nothing was solved in the extra frame.

The shootout saw fourteen shooters with the winner from Carter Popoff. Erricson had the chance to keep the shootout going but was stopped by Giants’ goalie Payton Lee for the Giants’ victory.

Lee made 37 saves in the game where the Giants were outshot 40-27.

With the win, the Giants are now 6-13-0-0 on the season and just 5 points behind the Cougars in the BC Division.
