Giants 2012 Bantam Draft

The Vancouver Giants Hockey Club has selected Burnaby’s Ty Ronning with their first pick, 15th overall, in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. Ronning played last season with the powerhouse Burnaby Winter Club Bantams that captured the BC and Western Canadian Championships. He tallied 77 goals and 76 assists in 72 games played. The 5’6”, 140 lbs right winger is the son of former Vancouver Canuck, Cliff Ronning.

“We are excited to add Ty, as we feel he has the potential to be a very entertaining, offensive player”, says Giants Executive VP and General Manager, Scott Bonner. “He comes from a winning program and obviously has a father that will help prepare him for the next challenges in his career.”

“We’re excited”, adds the senior Ronning, a veteran of 1137 NHL regular season games. “We always felt the Giants are a top organization from ownership to coaching. I was fortunate to play for Don Hay in Phoenix.”

“It’s pretty special”, says Ty. “I’m so excited to play in my home town. I’m going to work to get bigger and stronger and continue to develop. That’s my plan. Hard work pays off.”

The Giants were set to make three Second Round selections, but the trade winds began to blow.

The Giants were to select at 37th, 40th and 42nd overall. The 37th pick was their own, while the 40th pick was acquired from the Moose Jaw Warriors in the James Henry deal (2011/12) and the 42nd pick was acquired from the Portland Winterhawks in the Craig Cunningham deal (2010/11).

With the 37th pick, the Giants selected Jakob Stukel from Surrey, BC. The left winger is a product of Cloverdale Minor Hockey, and tallied 25 goals and 37 assists in 20 games last season. He’s listed at 5’9” and 150 lbs, born March 6, 1997.

They then traded the 40th pick to the Edmonton Oil Kings in exchange for their 44th overall pick and a 6th round pick, both coming later in today’s draft. They then traded the 44th pick to the Kamloops Blazers for their 2nd Round pick in 2013 and a 4th Round selection later today.

With the 42nd pick, the Giants selected Jesse Roach from Quesnel, BC. The right winger is 6’3”, 160 lbs, born March 9, 1997, and played last season playing Bantam AA at home (stats unavailable).

“What we’ve done is moved one of our second rounders from this season to next, while gaining a 4th and 6th round pick later today”, says Giants Executive VP and General Manager, Scott Bonner. “We had four second-rounders last season, so these trades allow us to spread our high-end picks a little better through our depth chart, ensuring a consistent pipeline of talent for the next few years.”
