Brendan Gallagher Invited To Canada’s World Junior Selection Camp

Vancouver Giants’ forward Brendan Gallagher is 1 of 41 players invited to Canada’s 2012 National Junior Team selection camp, December 10-14 at the WinSport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex in Calgary. This is the second straight year, the 19-year old has gotten the call to try out for Team Canada. Last year he was one of the final cuts. He joins Giants head coach Don Hay who will be the head coach of this year’s team. The 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships take place in Edmonton and Calgary and run from December 26, 2011 to January 5, 2012.

Of the 41 players invited, 16 are from the WHL, 15 from the OHL, 8 from the QMJHL, and 2 from US College.

“Being selected to attend the world junior camp once again is very exciting for me,” said Brendan Gallagher. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity and proving I deserve a spot on this year’s team. I learned a lot from my experience last year, which hopefully will benefit me this time around.”

A 5th round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2010, who just signed his first professional contract earlier this month, Gallagher has 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points in 23 games this year with the Giants. He is in his 4th year with organization and is on pace to break every offensive record in club history. He currently sits in 2nd place all-time in goals (114) and points (240) and in 4th place in career assists (126).

Of the 41 players (23 forwards, 14 defensemen, 4 goaltenders) invited, three are returning players – Quinton Howden (Oak Bank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL), Jaden Schwartz (Wilcox, Sask./Colorado College, CCHA) and Mark Visentin (Waterdown, Ont./Niagara, OHL) helped Canada earn the silver medal at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y.. In addition, thirty-six of the players named to the selection camp roster were drafted in either the 2010 or 2011 NHL Entry Drafts, including fourteen first-round selections and nine second-round picks.

There will be two Red-White intrasquad games (Dec. 11-12) and one game against a team of all-stars from Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). The CIS team will be comprised of players from the University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge. Once the final roster is named at the conclusion of the selection camp on Dec. 14, Canada’s National Junior Team will play in three pre-competition games in Alberta prior to the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship, Dec. 26, 2011 to Jan. 5, 2012 in Calgary and Edmonton.
Canada has medalled at thirteen consecutive IIHF World Junior Championships, including gold medal performances in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, silver medals in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011 and bronze medals in 2000 and 2001.
