Goaltending took center stage in Game #2 as Team White (playing their second game in less than two hours) eeked out a 2-1 victory over Team Black. Ty Ronning and Tyler Popowich each struck once for White while Brayden Watts had the lone marker for Team Black. Neither team was able to muster a goal in the final half of the game as Ryan Kubic (Team White) and Trent Miner (Team Black) were both exceptional for their respective teams. To their credit, both David Tendeck (Black) and Braedy Euerby (White) were effective as well in the game’s first half.
Ty Ronning got the ball rolling offensively for Team White early in the first half when he finished off a pretty three-way passing play with Cyle McNabb and Tristyn DeRoose. With that goal Ronning became the first player of the weekend to reach the two-goal plateau.
Black responded moments later though when Brayden Watts battled his way to the front of the net and converted off a James Malm rebound to even the score at 1-1.
The game’s final goal came shortly thereafter when sophomore Tyler Popowich was able jam a loose puck past David Tendeck on about his fourth whack at the puck in front of the net. At the half it was White leading Black 2-1.
The second half belonged entirely to the goaltenders as both Ryan Kubic and Trent Miner were put to the test in a big way. Miner, a 2001-born first round pick from 2016 did not let the pressure of the moment get to him as he made stunning saves off of Ty Ronning, Owen Hardy and Cole Shepard in the final half to keep his team within a goal.
At the other end, veteran Ryan Kubic showed remarkable poise as he made clutch saves in close off of James Malm, Aidan Barfoot and Haydn Delorme to keep his team ahead.
Despite some persistent pressure with their net empty, Black was unable to find the equalizer and Team White was able to hold on for the 2-1 win, improving their record on the day to 1-1.
White also took the shootout when forward Tristyn DeRoose netted the only goal in Round 4.
