Rik Fedyck

Tonight at the Pacific Coliseum, the Vancouver Giants look to extend their winning streak to seven straight games when they take the ice for the fifth time this season against arguably their biggest WHL rival, the Victoria Royals. The Royals are coming into tonight’s game looking to snap a three-game losing streak while the Giants are looking to defeat the Royals for a third time this season. The energy and excitement will be in high gear tonight as the Giants participate in 2018 Chevrolet Teddy Bear Toss!

Dec 8 Notes

Head Coach: Dan Price

Record: 13-12

Road Record: 4-7

Last Game: A 2-0 loss last night in Victoria

Last 10: 3-7

Goals For/Goals Against: 69 GF/75 GA (-6)

Power Play: 15.5% (21st in WHL)

Penalty Kill: 80.2% (6th in WHL)

Leading Scorers: Kaid Oliver (24 GP – 14G – 8A – 22PTS), D-Jay Jerome (25 GP – 12G – 9A – 21PTS), Dante Hannoun (19 GP – 10G – 9A – 19PTS)

Victoria Royals goaltender Griffen Outhouse has been a staple for the Victoria Royals and their many successes over the past handful of years.  The 20-year-old product of Likely, B.C. comes into tonight’s gam with a 20-6-1-0 lifetime record against the Vancouver Giants and an overall record of 98-52-10-3 with 10 career shutouts. A win tonight would move the veteran of 169 career regular season appearances to within one of 100. Outhouse has started all four games against the Giants so far this season.

2018-19 has been a breakout season so far for 1999-born forward D-Jay Jerome. The 1999-born product of Lethbridge, AB comes into this weekend ranked second on the team in scoring with 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points through 25 games played. His 12 goals rank him second on the team behind only Kaid Oliver and his 21 points this season have already surpassed his previous season high for points (16) which was set during the 2016-17 season with Red Deer and Prince Albert. Jerome suited up in 31 games last season for the Royals and managed just one assist. In four meetings against the Giants this season, D-Jay Jerome leads all Victoria skaters with three goals.

Teams two-through-five in the B.C. Division standings are currently in a nip-and-tuck log-jam. A five-point swing separates the second placed Kelowna Rockets (30 points) with the fifth placed Prince George Cougars (25 points). The Victoria Royals find themselves in third place with 26 points. The Blazers also have 26 points, but have one less win than the Royals do. The Giants currently lead the B.C. Division by 12 points ahead of Kelowna, and have also played in three fewer games. The Victoria Royals have never missed the playoffs since moving to the island for the 2011-12 season, and so far through 25 games they stand in the top eight of the Western Conference playoff picture.

 Head Coach: Michael Dyck

Record: 20-6-2-0

Home Record: 13-4-1-0

Last Game: A 4-2 win at home Sunday over the Tri-City Americans

Last 10: 7-3

Goals For/Goals Against: 93 GF/63 GA (+30)

Power Play: 23.2% (11th in WHL)

Penalty Kill: 85.5% (2nd in WHL)

Leading Scorers: Milos Roman (28GP – 16G – 13A – 29PTS), Davis Koch (28GP – 9G – 20A – 29PTS), Bowen Byram (28GP – 8G – 16A – 24PTS)

Last season’s Teddy Bear goal scorer for the Vancouver Giants was Bowen Byram. The then 16-year-old scored on a power play in the third period of what would end up as a 2-0 victory for the Giants at home against the Prince George Cougars on December 16th, 2017. Byram comes into tonight’s game with eight goals which ranks second only to Moose Jaw’s Josh Brook for goals among WHL defencemen. No Giant as ever scored two Teddy Bear Toss goals. Does that change tonight?

Coming into tonight’s game Davis Koch is riding a nine-game point streak while Milos Roman brings a six-game goal scoring streak. During the past nine games, Koch has six goals and 10 assists for 16 points while Roman has six goals and three assists for nine points during his recent six-game run. The Calgary Flames prospect leads the Giants with 16 goals and would be as good a favourite as any to register tonight’s Teddy Bear goal!

Here’s a list of every single Vancouver Giants Teddy Bear Toss goal scorer:

2004 – Gilbert Brule

2005 – Mitch Bartley

2006 – Tim Kraus

2007 – James Henry

2008 – Adam Basford

2009 – Craig Cunningham

2010 – Michael Burns

2011 – Brett Kulak

2012 – Trevor Cheek

2013 – Trent Lofthouse

2014 – Jackson Houck

2015 – Ty Ronning

2016 – James Malm

2017 – Bowen Byram

  • Bowen Byram became just the second defencemen to ever score a Teddy Bear goal for the Giants. The first was Brett Kulak in 2011.
  • Tim Kraus’ Teddy Bear goal in 2006 came on a penalty shot.
  • The quickest Teddy Bear goal in Giants history came courtesy of Trevor Cheek in 2012. His goal came just one minute and 55 seconds into the game on Dec. 14 2012 against Prince George.
