Foster Scores Twice in Loss to Spokane

Thomas Foster scored two goals, but the Vancouver Giants dropped their pre-season opener by a score of 5-3 to the Spokane Chiefs on Friday afternoon at the Everett Silvertips’ Annual Pre-Season Showcase. Youngster Hunor Torzsok, who the Giants signed on Thursday, had Vancouver’s other goal.

Jaret Anderson-Dolan opened the scoring for the Chiefs just a few seconds after the midway mark of the first period, firing a wrist shot past Giants goaltender Trent Miner from the left wing. The G-Men responded to equalize just 24 seconds later when Torzsok, who was playing in his first WHL pre-season game, chipped a loose puck in the crease past Donovan Buskey in the Chiefs’ goal. Curtis Miske gave Spokane the lead again, finding the net on a man advantage with just 10 seconds left in the first period to make it 2-1.

Foster netted his first of the night to tie the game in the second stanza, scoring from the slot after a pretty centring feed from Torzsok. The Chiefs would get another late goal, this time from Jake McGraw with under two minutes remaining in the period, to go up 3-2. A few seconds after the go ahead goal, Giants defenceman Dmitry Osipov was given a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct after a big hit on the end boards in his own zone.

The Chiefs would extend their lead in the third period as Hayden Ostir bagged the eventual game winner in the dying seconds of the Osipov major penalty. Foster pulled the G-Men back to within one goal with a power play marker of his own, bulging the twine on a sharp angle shot from the left wing, but Curtis Miske added an insurance goal later in the game for Spokane.

The Chiefs outshot the Giants 30-20. Vancouver went 1-for-3 on the power play. Trent Miner allowed two goals on 20 shots over 30:08 of action while David Tendeck let in three goals on 10 shots while spending 29:21 between the pipes.
