A Trio of Giants Prospects Making News

Last week, BC Hockey unveiled their 28-man shortlist for potential participation on Team BC at the 2012 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup, scheduled for November 1-4 in Calgary.

The Vancouver Giants would like to congratulate 3 bantam draft picks from this past May that are on that list, including forward Ty Ronning, their 1st-round pick, forward Jakob Stukel, their 2nd round pick, and defenseman Mitch Stapley, their 9th round pick.

Here is the full list of players on the shortlist

The players will not be evaluated by the coaching staff over the course of the hockey season, and the final roster will be announced in October.

“Congratulations to the 28 players selected for the U16 Team BC shortlist. It is quite an accomplishment to be selected amongst this elite group of players. It was an extremely competitive camp, with the energy and urgency elevating each ice time. Having said that, there are some great players left off this list as this age group is very deep with skill and elite talent,” commented Head Coach, Ryan Weber. “Team BC will feature a very skilled and talented group with big-game experience and the ability to perform under pressure. The entire management and coaching staff is excited to see these players performing for their club teams in fall, and wishes them the best of luck!”
“We are very encouraged with the short list of players who will battle for one (1) of the 20 spots,” commented Mitch Pinsky, Director of Operations. “Over the next few months Team BC staff along with High Performance District Evaluators will closely watch the players in order to find the right mix that will be able to make up the best team as we head to Calgary. We are looking for players with a combination of character, tenacity, skill and most importantly, a willingness to play whatever role is asked of them in order for Team BC to achieve our ultimate goal of winning the 2012 Western Canada Challenge Cup.”
The Under 16 Program is designed as an introduction to BC Hockey’s High Performance Program, which exposes players, coaches and officials to short term competition. The U16 Program also acts as a precursor to the BC Hockey High Performance U17 Program, which is used to identify and train players and team personnel for Provincial, Regional and National Teams.
The Western Canada U16 Challenge cup, presented by the WHL, happens every non Canada Winter Games year. It is a round robin format tournament consisting of the four (4) western branches: BC Hockey, Hockey Alberta, Saskatchewan Hockey Association and Hockey Manitoba. The final game is determined based on the round robin standings.
