Stastny Added To Protected List

The Vancouver Giants have added Slovakian centre Andrej Stastny to their protected list. The 19 year old forward was originally selected by the Saskatoon Blades in the 2010 CHL import draft, 57th overall, but were unable to secure his release from HK Dukla Trencin, his pro team in Slovakia. As a result they dropped him from their list. Vancouver had an import spot open up when forward Casper Carning decided to return to Sweden.

A native of Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia, the same hometown as former Giant Andrej Meszaros, Stastny stands 6’4, 203lbs and has the ability to play all three forward positions. Last year he played for Slovakia’s world junior team, registering 3 points in 6 games during the tournament. He will be a part of this year’s team as well.

“When Saskatoon removed him from their protected list we checked around and determined he is the type of player who can help us,” said Executive Vice President and General Manager Scott Bonner. “Now it’s a matter of getting him over here. Best case scenario he is here as soon as possible, worst case, he arrives after the World Junior Championships.”

The Giants have a history of working with Stastny’s agents, Ritch Winter and Gerry Johansson. They represent current players Brendan Gallagher, David Musil and the team’s other import, Marek Tvrdon.

Stastny is no relation to former NHL brothers Peter, Anton, and Marian.
