Giant Alumni commit to U of A
July 23, 2010 - The Vancouver Giants would like to congratulate
former players Mitch Czibere and Alex Rodgers for their commitment
to play for the University of Alberta Golden Bears next season.
They, along with nine other recent WHL graduates, will be the
newest members of the Bears’ program and will now begin
to take full advantage of the WHL Scholarship Program.
Czibere played three seasons for the Giants before spending his
final WHL season with the Regina Pats. He was originally a Second
Round Bantam Draft selection of the Giants in 2004.
Rodgers suited up for 33 regular season and 10 playoff games
for the Giants in 2008/09 after being acquired from the Kamloops
Blazers in a mid-season trade. He played his final year of WHL
hockey last season with the Prince George Cougars.
From WHL.ca
The WHL recognizes the paramount importance that parents and
players place on education. That is why the WHL and Canada West
Universities have teamed up to provide - Western Canada's Premiere
Hockey Scholarship.
For every season a player plays in the WHL, they receive a full
year guaranteed Scholarship, including tuition, textbooks and
compulsory fees, to a post-secondary institution of their choice.
For example, players graduating from a four-year WHL career are
eligible to receive four years of scholarship funding. Since 1993,
Western Hockey League Clubs have provided close to 3,000 Scholarships
representing an investment in excess of $9 million, making the
WHL the leading provider of hockey scholarships in Western Canada.
The WHL Scholarship not only encourages its graduates to pursue
a post-secondary education, it also affords graduates the opportunity
to continue playing hockey at an elite level in the Canadian University
or College systems. Each year over 230 WHL graduates receive a
WHL Scholarship.
