Giants Select Slovakian Forward With First Import Pick
Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Giants Executive Vice President
and General Manager, Scott Bonner, announced today that the Giants
have selected Slovakian left winger Marek Tvrdon with their first
selection in the 2010 CHL Import Draft. The pick, 13th overall
in the First Round, was acquired in a trade during the 2009/10
season with the Regina Pats.
Tvrdon, born January 31, 1993, is listed at 6’3”,
195 lbs and will be eligible for selection in the 2011 NHL Entry
Draft. He suited up last season for HK Nitra of the Slovakian
U20 League, recording 25 goals and 31 assists, for 56 points in
45 games. He also represented his country in April at the IIHF
U18 World Hockey Championships in Belarus, recording 3 goals and
1 assist in 6 tournament games.
Bonner is excited with his first selection: “Marek is a
big, strong winger with really good hands. We hope he can help
fill the void that a player like Tomas Vincour has left.”
Each team in the CHL can carry two European players on its roster
each season. In the annual CHL Import Draft, the order of selection
rotates between the WHL, OHL and QMJHL, with teams picking in
inverse order of the regular season standings. The Giants will
make one more First Round selection later today at 37th overall.
