The Vancouver Giants Hockey Team along with the generous support
of education partners, CIBC, Save On Foods, Campbell’s Soup,
Mylan Inc., and ActNow BC, are pleased to present the CIBC Read
to Succeed Literacy Initiative, now in its ninth year. In 2009-10,
the Read to Succeed program involved 70 schools and over 13,000
students
The program is aimed at grades 1 to 7 classes to encourage the
students’ reading and studies as they begin their intermediate
school years. Giants’ players, who are students themselves,
visit schools to speak about the importance of education and present
a reading and activity challenge to the students.
Classes participate in a reading program based on books of interest
and appropriate reading level and a physical activity program for
a two-week period. Each student completes a passport log of minutes
spent reading and being physically active outside of school, and
have it initialled by a parent, in order to contribute to a class
tally.
A full class tally, based on 15 minutes of reading and 30 minutes
of physical activity for each student per evening over a 2 week
period, will qualify the class for tickets to attend a WHL Vancouver
Giants game.
Any interested schools looking to have their students involved
in the program are encouraged to download the application form or
contact the Giants office at 604-4-GIANTS.
