PREVIEW: Vancouver Giants vs. Victoria Royals (Game #3)

Tonight at the Langley Events Centre, the Vancouver Giants and Victoria Royals square off in Game 3 of their best-of-seven first-round playoff series. The Giants earned a split on the weekend and have snatched home ice advantage in the series. A win tonight would ensure that remains the case with Game 4 looming Thursday.

Game Notes March 27

VICTORIA ROYALS

 OVERVIEW:

Record: 1-1

Goals For/Goals Against: 6/6

Power Play: 1/9

Penalty Kill: 5/5

Leading Scorers: Tanner Kaspick (2GP – 1G – 2A – 3PTS), Jared Freadrich (2GP – 1G – 1A – 2PTS), Matthew Phillips (2GP – 0G – 2A – 2PTS)

 WHO’S UP FRONT:

Noah Gregor: The San Jose Sharks prospect had a goal and an assist in Game 2 and has two points through two games in the series. Gregor finished this season with 65 points through 60 games and had 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points in 30 games with Victoria.

Matthew Phillips: The Royals leading scorer during the regular season has two assists through two games so far. He set up Jeff de Wit for the winning goal late in the second period of Game 2. During the regular season Phillips had eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points against the Giants.

WHO’S ON D:

Jared Freadrich: The 19-year-old became the first Royals defenceman to score in the series when he converted on a second period power play marker on Saturday in Game 2. For the series he has a goal and an assist and led all Royals in scoring during the regular season with 32 points.

Kade Jensen: The 20-year-old had an assist in Game 2 and is an even plus-minus so far in the series. He’s logged big minutes defensively and will be tasked tonight with shutting down the Giants top forwards.

 WHO’S IN GOAL:

Griffen Outhouse: The pride of Likely, B.C. is 1-1 so far in the series with a 3.02 goals-against-average and a .912 save percentage. His best period was the third period of Game 2 where he turned aside all 13 Giants shots fired his way. He’s 5-4-2-0 in 11 career WHL playoff starts.

X-FACTOR:

Tyler Soy?: Will he play? The Victoria Royals all-time leading scorer has missed the first two games of the series. His status for Game 3 remains a question-mark. If Soy is good to go he’d be a welcomed addition to the Royals lineup. He had 92 points in 66 games played this season.

 VANCOUVER GIANTS

 OVERVIEW:

Record:1-1

Goals For/Goals Against: 6/6

Power Play: 0/5

Penalty Kill: 8/9

Leading Scorers: Tyler Benson (2GP – 0G – 3A), Dawson Holt (2GP – 2G – 0A – 2PTS), Milos Roman (2GP – 2G – 0A – 2PTS)

WHO’S UP FRONT:

Tyler Benson: The Giants captain had two assists in Game 2 and leads all Giants with three points so far in the series. He had three goals and six assists for nine points in seven games against Victoria during the regular season.

Dawson Holt: Holt had two goals in Game 2 and is tied with Milos Roman for the team lead in that category heading into Game 3 at home tonight.

WHO’S ON D:

Brennan Riddle: The 20-year-old has a goal and an assist for two points through two games so far in the series and leads the team in plus-minus with a +3 rating. He and Matt Barberis will see a lot of big minutes tonight against the Royals top forwards.

Matt Barberis: With a goal, an assist and a similar +3 rating so far during the series, Matt Barberis has elevated his game in a big way. He’ll log big minutes in all situations again tonight.

WHO’S IN GOAL:

Trent Miner/David Tendeck?: David Tendeck’s status for Game 3 remains up in the air. He practiced yesterday and likely at worse will dress tonight, but whether or not the WHL’s Second-Team Western Conference all-star starts will likely be a decision made at warmup.

X-FACTOR:

Ty Ronning: The Giants leading scorer during the regular season has two assists in the series but does not have a goal yet. It’s only a matter of if, not when Ty Ronning finds the back of the net, but tonight at home marks a terrific opportunity for Ronning to lead the charge for his team.
