Popowich and Canada Black Advance to Semis at U17 Challenge

Team Canada Black defeated Finland 3-1 in the quarterfinals at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on Thursday. Giants forward Tyler Popowich is playing for Canada Black.

Canada Black finished atop Group A after going 2-1 in the preliminary round. Popowich and his teammates defeated the Czech Republic and the USA while losing to Team Canada White before their quarterfinal victory over Finland.

Popowich and Canada Black will now face Russia in their semi-final matchup at 4:30pm on Friday.

Popowich, who was drafted third overall by the Giants in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, has one assist and two penalty minutes through four games at the tournament. The Surrey native has played 10 games for the Giants this season. It’s his rookie year in the WHL.
