Newcomer Trevor Cheek Propels the Giants to their First Victory
Sep 30, 2012
VANCOUVER, BC – With his parents in attendance from Vancouver, Washington, in just his 2nd game with his new team, Trevor Cheek scored the game-winner and added an assist in leading the Giants to a 3-2 victory Sunday night and earning himself 1st star honours in front of 5,148 fans at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver.
Despite giving up a goal on the first shot of the game for the 3rd time in 4 games, the Vancouver Giants were not to be denied the win column this evening. After Mike Aviani opened the scoring on the power play for Spokane at 4:29, the Giants used their own power play late in the frame to tie things up, with Nathan Burns the beneficiary of a stupendous pass from Cheek.
In the 2nd period, David’s Musil’s wrist shot at the 6 minute mark handcuffed Chiefs netminder Mac Engel and gave the Giants their first lead of the season at 2-1, which they would carry into the 3rd.
8 minutes into the final frame, again on a power play, Mitch Holmgren found the puck on a scramble and potted his 4th goal in 2 nights and 5th on the season to tie things up at 2.
But, tonight's “Insurance Goal of the Game” was scored by Trevor Cheek at 14:07 of the 3rd period. Blake Orban broke up an attempted rush out of the zone by Spokane at the right point, broke down the wing and then feathered a beautiful pass cross-crease to Trevor Cheek, who, while falling down, was able to slide the puck underneath Engel to give the Giants the 3-2 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Despite facing just 15 shots, backup Tyler Fuhr looked terrific in his first WHL start for the Giants, making several clutch saves en route to his first WHL win. Mac Engel took the loss for Spokane with 21 saves on 24 shots.
