Vancouver’s First Overall Pick,
After breaking an Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League record, Tyler Benson became a name widely known to the hockey world, but Benson isn’t new to the Western Hockey League.
Tyler’s older brother Cole plays for the Edmonton Oil Kings and the younger Benson finds himself at the games with his family to support Cole.
For most, breaking a league record would be the most memorable achievement in their hockey career, but even after an incredible season with the South Side Athletic Club Southgate Lions where the 5’11” left-winger registered 146 points in 33 games, Benson’s most memorable moment was when he won the Western Canadian Bantam AAA Championship this past season with the SSAC Southgate Lions.
When it comes to his early memories of hockey and where he got his start, Benson credits his dad with building a backyard rink every year where he would spend hours shooting pucks with his older brother.
After hearing his name called by the Vancouver Giants as the first overall pick in the 2013 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, Benson was excited to join the organization and said, “The most exciting part about being drafted by Vancouver is that they are a winning organization and have had success in the past.”
The 15 year-old knows that the Giants are building for another Memorial Cup winning team and that adds to the excitement for Benson.
