Giants co-owner Pat Quinn to Coach In the Outdoor Classic
While it may not be the Head Coaching gig he’s ultimately after, legendary bench boss Pat Quinn will step back behind the bench at least one more time for an alumni game, as the Leafs and Red Wings wrap up 2012 at Comerica Park in Detroit for the annual NHL Winter Classic.
In an announcement made yesterday, it was revealed that the hometown Red Wings will have former coaches Scotty Bowman and Barry Smith behind the bench against former Toronto coaches Red Kelly and Pat Quinn.
Amidst the cream of the crop of all-time coaches, Pat Quinn can certainly hold his own. He is the NHL’s fourth winningest coach of all-time and also a two-time Jack Adams Award recipient for Coach of the Year. On top of that, he led Team Canada to back-to-back world championships with a gold medal at the 2002 Olympics followed by another gold at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
Now there has been so much interest from the two team’s alumni groups in playing at Comerica Park that there will actually be 2 alumni outdoor games on Dec. 31 — the first time that’s been done in the event’s brief history. It’s unclear right now as to whether Pat Quinn and Red Kelly will coach one game each or co-coach both games together.
Some of the famed “blue and white” alumni that Quinn will help to coach include Darryl Sittler, Rick Vaive, Dave Andreychuk, Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark, Curtis Joseph, Felix Potvin and Johnny Bower.
The Maple Leafs/Red Wings alumni games on Dec. 31 will precede the regular season game between the two clubs the following day on January 1st, 2013.
