BEHIND THE MASK: Trent Miner

Behind every goalie mask is a story, and for Giants rookie Trent Miner his is no different.

When the rookie from Brandon, MB was approached about coming up with a design for his mask with the Giants, he had some thinking to do. He wanted to come up with something that fans in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland could identify with. That’s where an experienced artist like Dave Fried comes in…

“This was the first time that Dave had ever designed a mask for me, and the whole process very thorough and enjoyable,” said Miner. “I wrote down all of my ideas and Dave and I talked in great detail about them and what it could all look like. He couldn’t have done a better job. When I opened up the box and pulled the helmet out, it was a WOW moment for me. He was so professional, he never said ‘no’ to any of my ideas. He did exactly what I wanted him to do.”

The Back:

“The back is the City skyline of Vancouver. I wanted the mask to feature the City skyline that tied in the mix of the mountains and the valleys.”

The Left Side:

“We were trying to figure out what would be the most well-known building in Vancouver, and we agreed on B.C. Place. Everybody knows what B.C. Place looks like, no matter where they’re from. It signifies Vancouver.” (Note the tribute as well to the late Gordie Howe).

The Right Side:

“The ferry was my choice. I wanted something rustic. Something older that everybody in this area of the world could relate too.”

The Front:

“Culture in the Gray. Passsion in the red.”

“This was the first time that Dave had ever designed a mask for me, and the whole process very thorough and enjoyable. I wrote down all of my ideas and Dave and I talked in great detail about them and what it could all look like. He couldn’t have done a better job. When I opened up the box and pulled the helmet out, it was a WOW moment for me. He was so professional, he never said ‘no’ to any of my ideas. He did exactly what I wanted him to do.” – Giants goaltender Trent Miner.
