2 More Releases, Tvrdon In, Martinook Out & Practice Schedule

September 2, 2012

VANCOUVER, BC – The Vancouver Giants returned home early this morning from Kelowna, following a 3-2 shootout victory over the Rockets last night to even their pre-season record at 1-1.

After the game, the team re-assigned (94) forward Brodyn Nielsen to Junior A and (96) defenseman Shaun Dosanjh to Junior B. This brings the Giants current roster down to 31 (17 forwards, 9 defensemen, 5 goaltenders), including (94) forward Matt Bellerive and (92) forward Taylor Makin who are still missing in action with injuries.

Another player that will be missing in action, quite possibly on a permanent basis, is (92) forward Jordan Martinook. On Friday, the 40-goal scorer officially signed an NHL contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, and he will be leaving Vancouver on Monday to check things out in Phoenix and meet with some key people. Regardless of what happens with the NHL, Martinook is most likely going to suit up for the Coyotes AHL affiliate in Portland this season, and their training camp begins on September 28th.

With Martinook and Brendan Gallagher both gone, the Vancouver Giants are happy to welcome back someone who will likely be their go-to player for offense this season. After getting delayed in his hometown Slovakia with VISA troubles, sniper Marek Tvrdon came back to town yesterday afternoon and practiced with the team today (from 11-1). After missing the entire training camp, it might be a bit of an adjustment for Tvrdon to start, but the Giants are hoping he can find his form in a hurry before the regular season opener on Friday, September 21st vs Victoria.

In the meantime, the Giants are working hard at practice. This morning, they were on the ice at 11am for a couple of hours, and will also practice Monday to Thursday this week (and every week throughout the season) from 1:30 to 3:45. The exception this week is Wednesday, when Vancouver travels to Kamloops for a 7pm face-off vs the Blazers.
